I’m not one for taking supplements really, I try to eat healthily and a bit of everything, and, if I ever feel run down, have relied on a course of Berocca or Pharmaton Complex, along with boosting my intake of fresh fruit and vegetables. Of course, like most, when I see jars and jars of superfoods I always wonder if they work and are they worth taking, especially given their cost, so after trying a sample at a trade fair, I decided to give it a go and take Pukka’s Vitalise for a month.
Pukka Herbs make a vast array of organic herbal teas and supplements, based on Ayurvedic Medicine. One of their ranges is Organic Bio-Nutrients, a variety of organically grown superfoods including roots, fruits, grasses and seaweeds, which are freshly freeze dried. Vitalise is marketed as a “natural energy boost” which improves your energy levels and immunity. It’s a dark green powder containing beetroot, bilberries, wheat and barley grass, spirulina, chlorella and seaweed, among other things.
I’m not going to lie to you, it’s not exactly delicious, but, in all honesty, the smell and colour are far worse than the actual taste. I really thought I was going to have to mix it with fruit juice but I’ve been simply mixing it with a little bit of water and downing it like a veggie power shot. To me, it has a very, very faint taste of vegetables and, since I don’t dislike them, I haven’t had an issue with it, but, if you hate them, then simply mix with juice or add to a smoothie.
Now, I guess what you’re desperate to know is “does it work?”: Well, yes it does, however, not in the energy boosting way that an espresso or caffeine tablets might. This doesn’t give you a buzz after taking it, you don’t suddenly feel energised, it simply “keeps you going” like a long-life battery when you think you can’t possibly do any more. I started taking it a couple of weeks before a very busy period at work and I don’t think I could have gotten through it all without it. Not only this, my skin looks clearer and, most importantly, it’s a fabulous nutritional supplement which can only be good for you. In terms of immunity, again, I cannot vouch for this; yes, I have not had a cold or sore throat since I started taking it, but this could be because I eat healthily and have not been in contact with anybody who has had one!
