Yoo Moo

I don't need an excuse to eat frozen yoghurt, if truth be told, I prefer it to most ice-creams... apart from Gelati in Italy, of course. It also helps to know it's fat free so I can therefore eat twice as much but I confess I'm a bit if a purist when it comes to frozen yoghurt, plain suits me perfectly: both sweet and sour, creamy and refreshing without being sickly, so I rarely eat any other.
I was recently asked to try Yoo Moo at their rather funky space on the 4th floor of Harrods where they offer 4 flavours which can be mixed and matched: natural, strawberry, Belgian chocolate and Madagascan vanilla, as well as a vast array of toppings, from fruits and nuts to sweets and biscuits.
Natural was going to have to be tried, but I did venture out of my comfort zone and add coconut and raspberries to it whilst, from one extreme to another, the second option was chocolate and vanilla with Oreos. Although we opted for "regular" sizes, they were pretty huge, you could easily share one portion between two people. The natural was divine with the raspberries, perfect texture and temperature, but I could have foregone the coconut. Surprisingly, it was the vanilla I found more overly sweet than the chocolate, which had an almost bitterness to it. I would definitely go for the chocolate, plain, if I fancied a dessert, otherwise it's natural all the way.
It's very good, though at £5.50 for a portion without a topping, it's a bit pricey, especially when you compare it to Snog or Frae. http://www.yoomoo.com/

Skin Friendly Make-Up Part 2

When it comes to make-up I live in hope that I generally look like I'm not actually wearing any, as in, that I am just gorgeous as it is, even though I may have applied at least 6 products before leaving the house (I did say, I live in hope). But, if I had to pick one emergency item it would have to be blusher.
One of the basics when it comes to make-up, nothing can make you go from pasty to perky like a bit of colour on your cheeks, but, alas, it’s also one of the most badly chosen in our make up kits.
I'm not going to talk to you about these shades per se or how to apply them as I think it's too much of a personal issue, especially since I realise that what I consider to be looking like Coco the Clown some women think is a healthy glow, but I can give you some idea of the textures and finishes available in these gorgeous natural products.
I’ve found you fabulous, skin friendly, chemical free blushers in all forms: powder, cream, cream to powder, loose and cream stick, so you have no excuse not to switch!
UNE Breezy Cheeks Blush £8.99
From Bourjois comes UNE, their all-natural make-up range (which, incidentally, now also extends to skincare). Fab packaging is the first thing you’ll notice about this: a slim case that slides open and also has mirror. This is a cream to powder blush which you can apply with your fingers or a foundation brush for a lovely dewy glow. It's 100% natural and perfect for those on a budget!
Pigment strength: medium

100% Pure Pot Rouge £15
These nifty little pots contain a shimmery almost powdery cream which you can use on cheeks and eyes and also apply with finger or foundation brush. Made with fruit & vegetable pigments they provide a very sheer finish which is buildable, with a lovely sparkle. Fantastic alone or as a highlighter. Not only 100% natural, but vegetarian and gluten free. Also contains Avocado Butter, Rosehip Oil and Vitamin E.
Pigment strength: sheer

Inika Mineral Blush Puff Pot £16
If you like mineral make up then this is the one for you: a brilliant concept whereby you can either unscrew the lid and apply the loose powder directly with a brush, as you would loose mineral make-up, or press the built in puff and apply directly to your cheeks. Gorgeously shimmery, you can build up the colour as required, though a little goes a long way. Also has a little mirror in the lid!
Pigment strength: sheer to medium

RMS Beauty Lip2Cheek £28
From one of my favourite brands comes this multiple cream which can be used on cheeks and lips for a lovely flush. Like the un-conceal, it’s made with mineral pigments blended with organic Coconut, Jojoba and Argan oils as well as Shea and Cocoa butters. This is both buildable and blendable with other shades. A tiny dab is all you need!
Pigment strength: strong

Vapour Beauty Aura Multi Use Blush (Classic and Radiant) $28 each
Vapour Beauty offer a cream blush stick in 3 options: classic, stain or radiant, of which I tested 2. Classic has a natural, matt finish, whilst Radiant has a slightly sheerer finish with a lovely shimmer. They both glide on to the skin, blend well and provide a lovely natural hint of colour to cheeks or lips. They offer a good range of shades, are all 70% organic and smell divine!
Pigment strength: sheer to medium

Miessence Shimmer Creme AUS$26
This looks like a tinted lip balm and has more of an oily texture, but, gives a wonderfully sheer pop of colour to the cheeks, more than you would expect. Made with organic Jojoba oil it’s also perfect for lips.
Pigment strength: very sheer

Living Nature Blush £15.30
If you prefer a powder blush, then try Living Nature: 2 suit-all shades which are easy to apply, giving you a natural, healthy glow with a velvety, matt finish. 100% natural, also contains Jojoba oil.
Pigment strength: sheer to medium

This should give you an indication of the finishes, however, bear in mind they appear a lot lighter on the skin as the swatches are on white paper. From left to right:
Vapour Beauty Aura Classic in Spark
Vapour Beauty Aura Radiant in Intrigue
Miessence Shimmer Creme in Berry
100% Pure Pot Rouge in Ballerina
RMS Beauty Lip2Cheek in Promise
These are the powder blushers: on the left, Living Nature Blush in Warm Summer and on the right, Inika Mineral Blush in Rosy Glow, which has a shimmery finish.

Café Luc - Review

Although Café Luc has been open quite a while, I only visited it recently as it has had mixed reviews from my fellow bloggers.  The blurb describes it as a “Grand European Café”, run by a Belgian couple offering French Brasserie inspired dishes. The place itself has that modern, clean, cut feel to it with leather banquettes, dark wood tables and lots of mirrors.
A strangely warm evening allowed for an aperitif at one of their little tables outside which, despite being on the pavement on Marylebone High Street, was still pleasant (this is England after all). We had a nice bottle of reasonably priced White which arrived with some Japanese rice crackers and goblet style glasses, a noteworthy change from the bog standard models you are usually presented with.
My first pleasant surprise arrived in the form of a basket of very nice bread with some AOC butter which, for me, should be standard from any half decent restaurant, or one pretending to be. Bread with butter and/or olive oil should appear within 10 minutes of sitting down, as should the offer of water and a decent pepper mill. Café Luc provided all three, a good start.

The menu itself was not over exciting (and I note it has since changed), three of us opted for Celeriac Remoulade with Prosciutto and they accommodated the vegetarian diner by preparing hers separately without the ham. The fourth chose a smoked salmon roll served with Radish. For mains three of us chose Steak which was very good, both tasty and tender, but was let down by a very watery peppercorn sauce. The vegetarian diner had a simple roast vegetable pasta concoction, which though boring, was actually very tasty. Pudding was probably the best: a Vanilla Panna Cotta with stewed pears which was well set, creamy and not overly sweet.

Café Luc is not what I would call value at at least £50 a head, but the place is nice, it runs like a well-oiled machine and I get what I expected.

Exfoliate Me

When it comes to beauty treatments there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good face scrub; Yes, we shouldn't vent our anger out on our skin but exfoliators these days are so fabulous that you can really go to town without overdoing it, even those of us with sensitive skin! It's almost cathartic really: getting rid of the old and revealing the new in a haze of essential oils.
I personally like doing it before or in a bath, removing with a hot flannel and following with a good mask to nourish and plump, what's better than that post mini facial glow?
Even those ultra-sensitive souls should do it once a week to get rid of old, dull skin. I find I particularly have to round my nose, where little dry patches appear and show up under make-up. As with all beauty products, there are zillions of exfoliators to choose from; Personally, I like cream based, so that narrows it down somewhat, and, needless to say, the usual applies: no mineral oil, silicones or parabens please. I’ve used quite a few over the years and had found one in particular which is very good, but you can always twist my arm to try something new when it comes to beauty products, so, here you go, these are some of the ones I’ve tried recently which fit the bill for me:
ESPA Refining Skin Polish    £25.50 for 50ml
This is one of the best exfoliators I’ve tried (and my friends Jo and Nina agree!), it’s a cream with grains so fine it doesn’t even look like an exfoliator. The grains themselves are made of crushed clay which not only sloughs away dead skin but also purifies. It contains Shea Butter to nourish and is gently scented with Rose and Geranium oils. Fantastic! For more details click here

OSKIA Micro Exfoliating Balm £46 for 50ml
What can I say, this is now my favourite exfoliator EVER. This is an oil based balm (and we all know how I love a balm) containing micro granules of silica and pure MSM to not only buff but also feed your skin. It’s also adjustable (another bonus) so you can either use it on dry skin for extra scruffing or mix with water into a gentler cream. I have been using it on dry skin, like a cleansing balm, then gradually adding water to emulsify it before leaving on for 10 minutes, like a mask, to reveal baby smooth softness. It’s made with Sweet Almond and Sesame Seed oils, as well as Shea Butter, Peppermint, Kukui and Rosehip, which give it a divine smell.  Worth every penny! For more details click here
Stem Organics Smooth Skin Exfoliant  $39 for 125ml
This, like Espa and Stem, has super fine granules made from bamboo which you won’t even be aware of until you put it on your skin. Made with Organic Aloe Vera, Pomegranate and a host of organic essential oils, this has the texture of a light cleansing milk so would suit those with normal to greasy skin. It smells lovely and fresh, really leaves you feeling buffed and is ideal to use in the shower! ****SPECIAL OFFER: Stem are offering all Yum readers 20% OFF ALL PRODUCTS!: Quote code YUMexfoliate when you check out!****For more details click here
Borealis Organic Exfoliating Face Scrub £12.50 for 50ml
This is what I would call a “traditional cream exfoliator”, a thick creamy base containing Jojoba beads, ideal for those who like a “real” scrub. Made with organic Safflower, Castor, Jojoba and Shea Butter oils, it also contains essential oils of Palmarosa, Mandarin and Ylang Ylang. It works well and leaves skin smooth, the main issue I have with it is the scent as Ylang Ylang is one of the very few essential oils I can't stand.....Aside from this, it’s a fabulous budget buy! For more details click here
Terre D’Oc Gentle Face Scrub £22.95 for 100ml
If you’re into tropical then this is the one for you, also cream based, this scrub contains Bamboo and Coconut grains in a luscious base of organic Coconut, Jojoba, Sesame Seed and Shea Butter oils, with Vanilla, Sandalwood and Jasmine essential oils. It's very thick and creamy, and considering the size of the jar, it's also good value. For more details click here

SUTI Organic Skincare

I admit it: I’m a sucker for balms and face oils.

There is nothing I love more than slathering myself in them at night, not only do they smell divine, they help me sleep and nourish the skin, so I always go to bed in hope that I will awake looking 10 years younger. Whilst waiting for this miracle to happen, I've been keeping an eye out for brands to write about, so, when I came across SUTI I felt like my Christmases had all come at once: I spotted their stand at a trade fair displaying a small selection of jars and bottles in the kind of packaging I would unconsciously migrate towards. On closer inspection, I discovered balms, oils and floral waters which, not only looked amazing, but smelt amazing too. I got chatting to one of the ladies who turned out to be Suzannah, one of the founders of the brand and the one known as “the nose”. We immediately bonded over a mutual passion for natural skincare, oils and facials, and I knew then that I was going to love this brand.
Suzannah (SU), after a long period of illness, converted to homeopathic medicine, and, with that, started exploring holistic therapies. She qualified in Reiki, Reflexology and Aromatherapy, and built up a private practice from home, where she also started making her own skincare products to suit each of her clients’ specific needs. Using organic butters and oils with extracts from herbs & flowers, she formulated balms and treatment oils for her clients to use at home. Her sister in law Tina (TI aka “the eyes”) went from being her guinea pig to her business partner and so, SUTI was born. Tina, a graphic designer by profession, is also the brand manager and the person credited with the fantastic branding which represents everything they stand for: modern, clean, simple, natural and effective products that are “good enough to eat” so you can, as the packaging says, “feed your skin”.
The current range consists of 7 products which are all made with cold pressed, organic and, where possible fair trade, oils and butters: a cleansing balm, 2 floral waters, 2 face oils, a treatment balm and a foot balm.
CLEANSE Facial Cleanser
This is an oil based balm which, at first, looks grainy in texture due to the Shea Butter, which solidifies below a certain temperature, but melts into a lusciously zesty cleanser which is also suitable for removing eye make-up. As a huge fan of anything citrusy, the scent alone won me over but, not only that, it cleanses without leaving any residue, it gets rid of waterproof mascara and it doesn’t sting your eyes, all of which are absolute basic requirements for me. It contains Shea, Cocoa and Avocado Seed Butters, with Sunflower, Avocado, Apricot Kernel and Olive oils, as well as Calendula, Lime, Mandarin, Lavender and Geranium, which give it a divine scent. One of the nicest cleansing balms I’ve ever used.
Facial Toners: Rose and Peppermint
Both of these are made by distilling rose petals and peppermint leaves, resulting in clear, beautifully scented flower waters. The Peppermint is made using organic leaves and the Rose is made holistically using the "Tess of the D'Urbervilles" variety plant which is placed under a full moon to harness its' energy. The perception of the "Rose Moon Essence" is that it is perfect for the heart as it encourages joy and happiness, and relieves sadness and grief. These gorgeous sprays can be used after cleansing, as toners or as refreshing mists. I find they are both fantastic before moisturising, so I’ve been using the Peppermint in the morning, as a wake-me-up and the Rose at night, as a calm-me-down. I like using them to add extra hydration to the skin, so I spritz then, while the skin is still damp, massage my cream or oil in over it. The packaging is also fabulous: lovely glass bottles with a spritzer which can be refilled too!
REJUVENATE Facial Oil
What was originally created for a client with a facial scar has become one of their best-selling products and goes above and beyond moisturising. With a beautiful warm colour, it’s light and silky in texture and, needless to say, smells amazing. It contains Rosehip Seed Oil and carrot extract (which gives it the colour) to smooth scar tissue and help restore elasticity, Evening Primrose Oil, Sandalwood and Frankincense to heal, repair and promote skin cell growth, as well as Argan and Jojoba Oils to calm irritated, inflamed and blemished skin. Essential oils of Neroli and Tangerine not only give it a beautiful scent, they also help alleviate stress and ease away mental chatter. This, as with all the products, is suitable for all skin types. It’s indicated as a daytime oil, but, I have to confess, I find that I don’t really have time in the morning to allow it to sink in properly before applying make-up, so I’ve been using it at night as well as at weekends, when I don’t wear anything (on my face I mean!) and can really give my skin time to absorb and benefit from it. However, if you have dry skin, you could easily use this as a day moisturiser.
NOURISH Facial Oil
Its’ gorgeous shade of pale green reminds me of delicious unfiltered olive oil, the kind I can just drink out of the bottle. This is an intensive, regenerating treatment oil, formulated to nourish, strengthen and replenish your skin while you sleep. It’s made with Avocado, Macadamia, Apricot Kernel, Sesame Seed and Argan oils, along with Calendula, Orange, Geranium, Bergamot, Patchouli and Jasmine, making it the kind of unguent you want to spend time massaging into your skin at night. Although it feels a little heavier than Rejuvenate don't be put off, your skin absorbs it in such a way that you awake feeling soft and smooth. I have been using both the Nourish and Rejuvenate oils at night, alternating them depending on my mood or how my skin feels. I apply 2-3 sprays of the Rose Flower Water, warm the oil between the palms of my hands, then massage into the skin while it's still damp.
PURITY Moisturising Balm
I cannot begin to tell you how good this smells, literally, good enough to eat. It’s kind of zesty, fresh and floral, all at the same time, but without being overwhelming. This oil based balm is designed as a “rescue salve” of sorts, which you can apply as needed to dry patches, lips, cuticles, sunburn, etc. but also as a mask or an intensive treatment. Like the cleanser, it’s also made with Shea Butter, giving it a slightly grainy texture which melts into a divine oil in the warmth of your hands. I particularly like using this as a mask in the bath: I cleanse beforehand, then apply a layer of this all over my face and neck, before lying back for a good 20 minutes. After that, I take a muslin cloth and, with hot water, use it as a compress over the balm, repeating 3-4 times. Then, using the same muslin cloth, remove as you would a cleanser, to reveal plumped, glowing skin. Alternatively, I also like using it after cleansing as an overnight treatment….to be honest, I love it so much I could use it every night, but then I feel like I’m cheating on the face oils….! It contains Shea Butter with Sunflower, Apricot Kernel, Sesame Seed and Calendula oils, Beeswax as well as essential oils of Lavender and Chamomile.
FABULOUS Foot Balm
I’ve tried my fair share of foot creams and balms, and found, like most, that you have to apply them every day over a period of time to see any effect. I admit it, I’m very lazy when it comes to this, but, am always willing to give products a chance, so I have been applying it after a bath/shower and within 3-4 uses I did see a difference: Like CLEANSE and PURITY, this is also an oil based balm which melts so you can massage into the skin, however, it sinks in remarkably quickly. It has a wonderful fragrance of Peppermint, Rosemary and Eucalyptus and can be rubbed on the legs also, which is great in hot weather. It’s made with Shea Butter, Sunflower, Olive, Pumpkin Seed and Avocado oils, as well as Calendula, Carrot, Lemon, Peppermint, Rosemary and Eucalyptus. Foot Heaven in a jar.
My conclusion? Suti products are not only glorious, effective and affordable, they will definitely be winning awards. You heard it here first.
